La Gala Flamenca of Flamenco Festival London 2023

The day came when the Sadler’s Wells stage was visited by the power of dance and song unleashed during La Gala Flamenca. Directed by choreographer and dancer Manuel Liñán, the event -co-produced together with La Bienal de Arte Flamenco de Málaga- has become a great success of the eighteenth edition of Flamenco Festival London.

Carrete de Málaga and his long career makes us reflect on the evolution of dance through the years and the different ways in which the body of a man is able to shape the flamenco dance. This reflection became movement in the show La Gala Flamenca.

Carrete, a man of race, ambiguous, fighter and lover of art, is the driving force behind the celebration of the passage of time and the evolution of this art. A show impregnated by the qualities that this great artist transmits us from his maturity: freedom, race, naturalness, love and respect.

The painfully beautiful dance of Manuel Liñán was also present in full flamenco exaltation, moving the traje de cola and the mantilla with a unique mastery; a whole allegory that breaks down walls in flamenco once again.

He is accompanied in the performance by two of the most remarkable dancers of the current scene: Alfonso Losa, Critics Award Jerez Festival 2022 and the most contemporary of the classical dancers; elegance and sublime technical control. And the powerful interpretation of El Yiyo, an exponent of the most racial flamenco, who offered his charisma and intensity to the audience at Sadler’s Wells.

A cast of exception topped by the singer Sandra Carrasco, bearer of one of the most special voices of the new flamenco.

La Gala Flamenca turned out to be one of the most applauded shows of the Flamenco Festival London 2023 in the three performances that took place on July 14 and 15.
