Born a Shadow is where flamenco dance meets the great female creators of the Spanish Golden Age. It’s about flamenco dancing to the lines of the classic female authors of the 16th and 17th centuries and doing it so in feminine plural.
Four imaginary letters written at different times and places are spinning the dialogue among the voices of four female artists: Teresa de Jesús, María de Zayas, María Calderon and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Through dance, music and words, we discover their experiences, concerns, creations and secrets in order to find the ties which bind them: loneliness as the price to pay for courage, the labyrinth of love and the painful quest for freedom.

“The Festival here did offer hope. Rafaela Carrasco […] appears on her way to creating truly original and modern flamenco, without gimmicks or pedantry. Her beautiful show was filled with atmospheric images evoking sensations and dreams […] But above all, Ms. Carrasco choreographed with contrapuntal complexity, meshing traditional moves with her own idiosyncratic and fluid style.”
