Nuevo Ballet Español

Formed in 1995 by Ángel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez, principal dancers and choreographers, has toured extensively throughout Spain, Europe and South America for the last ten years and has become the hottest dance sensation on the Spanish cultural scene.

Nuevo Ballet Español was formed in 1995, after Ángel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez, both won best dancer at Spain`94 dance and Flamenco Annual Choreography Awards.
Their vision: to celebrate the traditional art of Flamenco bringing it into the 21st Century and to a wider international audience. Their style, a unique combination of classic technique, cutting edge and contemporary style Flamenco

The Company has ten shows: "Infinito" (1995), "Canela y Fuego" (1996), "Sangre Flamenca" (1997), "Flameco Directo" (1998), "Gallo De Pelea" (1999), "NBEX5" (2000),,"Furia" (2000), Fury (2001), "Romeo y Julieta" (2003) and "Tierra" (2004)

Most of these shows are still on tour around the world, and have been part of many prestigious International Festivals such as: International Festival of Biarritz (France), International Festival of Carcassonne (France), Maison de la Danse (Lyon - France), Biennale di Venezia (Italy), International Dance Festival (Kuopio - Finland), International Dance Festival (Tampere - Finland), Flamenco Arts Festival (Santa Barbara - USA), International Dance Festival of Madrid (Madrid- España).

In 1996, NBE toured Spain with Infinito, the first production of the company, and the success was such that at the end of the same year they released a second production called Canela y Fuego, subsidized by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Madrid Regional Government.

In 1998, Nuevo Ballet Español was officially commissioned by the Madrid regional Government and, on November 7, its third production Sangre Flamenca was unveiled. It began touring in early 1998.

NBE embarked upon a two-year tour with their production Flamenco Directo and Gallo de Pelea, which respectively premiered on October 9 1998 in the
Teatro de Madrid and on 15 September 1999 in the Teatro Tivoli in Barcelona. The international tour has already visited more than ten countries (France, Finland, Peru, Venezuela, Spain, Italy, Tunisia, USA, Holland, Germany, Belgium, etc.).

In 2000, Ángel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez were awarded with the "Premio UP"For the best dance company of Spanish dance and flamenco.

The following years, Rojas and Rodríguez danced in the spanish Max Awards and were invited to be distinguished guests at the Gala of Culture Personalities of the Dance in the King's Palace (Spain)

NBE next project was Furia, which played in the Teatro de Madrid from 1 to 17 December 2000, and which began its international tour on February 18, 2001, visiting Italy, France, Finland, Holland, among other countries.

The next choreographic work of Nuevo Ballet Español was a special TV show for PBS (US public television) which ran in March 2002, with 24 dancers, 13 musicians; the show was simultaneously recorded on a video, DVD and disc entitled Fury.

April 16 2003 marked the premiere of Romeo y Julieta, the penultimate show staged by the company in Madrid's Teatro Albéniz. The show toured Germany in November of the same year.

Their choreographies are being danced by other companies and during the last months of 2003 they worked as choreographers for the musical Don Juan with music by Félix Gray and directed by Gilles Maheu, the dancers were chosen in Spain in a casting directed by Rojas and Rodríguez.

Don Juan was premiered the 18th February 2004 in the Saint Denis Theatre of Montreal (Canada) and toured the principal cities of Canada (Montreal, Québec and Ottawa) during 2004. The European premiere took place in Paris on the 23rd February 2005 and stayed in the Palais des Congres (Paris) until the 17th April 2005. For the Montreal season the NUEVOBALLET ESPAÑOL gave away their two leading dancers Ricardo López and María López, Rojas and Rodríguez premiered in Paris.

The 10th December 2004 Tierra was premiered in the Teatro of Madrid. Tierra is the generic name of the show and the same as the second part, choreographed by Ángel Rojas. The first part of the production De las cenizas has beenchoreographed by Carlos Rodríguez. This is the first time the company uses live and recorded music.
On October 2005 Ángel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez are awarded with the Villa Prize Pilar Lòpez for best Dance Performer 2005.
